Home Care Maintenance
You might be surprised to learn that gum health isn't as strong as it should be for many of us. In fact, according to the American Academy of Periodontology, three out of every four Americans suffer from some form of gum disease. Gum disease is a serious, chronic condition that not only leads to bad breath and tooth loss but is also linked to other health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and low birth weight in babies. It’s clear that gum health plays a much bigger role in our overall health than we might realize.
While brushing and flossing are the top methods for preventing gum inflammation, the key lies in doing them properly. Ask one of our friendly staff members to show you Dr. Romano’s proven technique for flossing and brushing. By using the correct methods, you're not just cleaning your teeth—you're protecting your body’s defense system against the harmful bacteria that can destroy both your gums and teeth. This bacterium forms a dangerous biofilm beneath your gums, where it thrives and creates communities that slowly break down your mouth and can even affect your overall health.
Once you’ve been diagnosed with periodontal disease or gingivitis, ongoing care is crucial. To keep your mouth healthy, we recommend continued periodontal therapy every three months to prevent the disease from recurring. During this therapy, Dr. Romano and our hygienist perform thorough evaluations, including taking x-rays, measuring your gum pockets, and offering tailored oral care instructions to ensure your long-term health. If you have dental implants, crowns, or extensive dental bridges, we also suggest regular visits to your general dentist to monitor your dental work. At RomanoPerio & Associates, we’re committed to helping you achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile by providing expert care and guidance every step of the way. Prevention is the key to lasting oral and overall health.
